Those of you with a finger on the pulse will know that King St in the CBD has recently seen the opening of a brand new eatery: Old Faithful Bar & BBQ. Brought to you by the folks behind Ezra Pound in Northbridge, it serves traditional American style BBQ food and quality craft beer & whiskey laced cocktails in a casual, hipster-chic-tinged setting. I popped in for a visit a while ago to get you the skinny on what they have going on…

The English speaking world can be a funny old place. The same word can mean vastly different things in different countries. Ask an American, for example, what a fanny is and they’re going to give you a much different answer than what we here down under would. Similarly the term BBQ holds hugely different meanings for us and our cousins across the Pacific (albeit with less potential for embarrassing misunderstandings than the previous example). For us it means chucking meat or sausages onto some kind of grill and cooking them for as long as it takes for the beer in our non-tong hand to run dry. For Americans, however, BBQ is an intricate and time honoured tradition that involves brining meat for an extended period of time, rubbing it with various herbs and spices and then slow cooking it in a smoker until it reaches a state of tender, smoky, flavoursome perfection. This is what you can expect when you head to Old Faithful.

In stark contrast to the upmarket formality most often associated with the King St set, Old Faithful exudes an air of laid back informality. There are no sycophantic wait staff catering to your every whim but rather canteen style food service, big bench tables and a large and well stocked bar. The menu also has a certain self-service type feel to it. You can either order your BBQ meat by the gram and add sides or choose from one of their range of BBQ sandwiches. I chose the former option and got 100 grams each of the Lamb Leg, Beef Brisket and Chopped Pig with some burnt end beans, coleslaw, potato salad and dill pickles on the side (which set me back around $32). It was all very tasty, the meat infused with great smokiness and flavour from the spices and the assemble-your-own-sandwich style of eating was fun and hands on. This amount of food was also realistically enough for two people as well (no I didn’t eat it all myself! I took some home with me, ok?!), so it was pretty good value too.

Drinks wise there is plenty of great stuff on offer to wash down your BBQ with. Along with a good wine list and range of beers (including some interesting small batch stuff from Feral Brewery on tap) they do some great cocktails as well. Some are their original creations and some are, as they put it, “classics with a twist”, like the Spiced Blood and Sand that manager Talmage Andersen whipped up for me.

All said and done Old Faithful is another great addition to the thriving CBD dining and drinking scene. Whether you’re after some good old fashioned American BBQ to satisfy your hunger or just simply want to sit at the bar, sip a drink and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and amazing smoky aromas, it’s definitely worth a visit. You just might want to leave your Louis Vuitton shopping bags in the car (or with your butler or wherever it is you rich people keep things these days. A horse drawn carriage?) lest they get smothered in BBQ sauce and animal fat. Hmmmmm, animal fat…
